YO BRO
Beyoncé and Jay-Z, The Kelly Family, The Simpsons, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Married… With Children, Family Feud – social concepts of family have often been reinforced by (pop)cultural representation. Although it might seem fairly obvious that relation and connections akin to relation can function beyond similarities in physical appearance, non-white and queer persons have been repeatedly denied this connection.
YO BRO questions common normative depictions of family, it picks them up and distorts them. Choreographer, performer, and theatre artist Joana Tischkau examines cultural and historical representations of family relationships in art in this work, together with her twin brother Aljoscha Tischkau, who works as a social education worker.
Utilising their bodies’ performative potential, they create new images of similarity and difference, thus telling family (hi)story anew.
